Spring/Summer 2011: Key Looks

by Nina Ashe, SexyPlus Clothing Blogger I got my first look at the fashion trends of spring / summer 2011 early last year coming back from Montreal.  I still remember the cashier’s face when it dawned on her just how much I was willing to shell out for a Vogue Collections magazine.  Not to mention reading my fav fashion sites ravenously through the year and keeping a close eye on the evolving and revolving collections in stores.  To think I had to wait a year to see it now in its beginnings and finally tell you about what’s on the horizon. Keep checking the blog periodically… I’ll discuss the collections’ key looks and inspirations, as well as specific clothing and accessories trends for the coming season. Now read on to get a feel for this year’s first front of warmth: KEY LOOKS '60s Ladylike This season it’s all about fashions that accentuate curves and femininity.  A hip-hugging sheath dress with a below-the-knee hem is the ultimate in hourglass dressing, while the full circle skirt and dress remain at the core of the trend... paired with a fitted top or a sexy sheer blouse.  We are talking ladylike “housewife” fashions of the ‘50s and ‘60s… not its later “mod” flair.  Think Betty Draper in long-hem skirts, cinched waists and prim & proper style.  It’s a season of authentic flats or dainty kitten heels that you may dare wear with a pair of little bobby socks.  Yes, I fear that trend is back too this season… along with other traditional ‘60s accessories:  cats-eye glasses, red bold lipstick or soft vintage pink, wide waist-cinching belts, as well as gloves and headscarves. '70s Sophistication Though the ‘50s and ’60s are back, inspired by such glamorous shows as Mad Men, so are the ‘70s!  Think '70s bohemian with their long shimmery dresses and '70s glamour in wide-leg pants and flowing elegant blouses.  The sophistication of the ‘70s is where it’s at mostly: long slinky gowns reminiscent of night at Studio 54 or hot pants, the ultimate ‘70s item, paired with thigh-high boots.  A simple touch of a key piece can take any outfit back to that era too.  It’s a time for bold accessories: floppy felt hats, exotic brilliant jewels, and super-high platforms… lurex and metallic fabrics, leather satchels, neat piles of bangles and long pendant beaded necklackes.  Think Diana Ross after the Supremes or Bianca Jagger at her best. Punk Fashion Punk is with us again this season… but don’t dive head first into it… be inspired by it instead.  We’re not talking head-to-toe “costume” punk anymore, but more about mixing punk elements with other seasonal trends.  Think timeless biker pieces such as the motorcycle jacket and boots, as well as leather pants or its skirt alternative... or simple punk details such as studs and safety pins as brooches or jewelry.  Ultimately, the punk should be mixed and matched with the other main looks of the season… rather reminiscent of my teen years in pretty dresses with leather boots.

Be sure to stay tuned for more great looks coming this season… I’ll specifically have a look at the clothing and accessories that will embody the key looks for Spring/Summer 2011… the jumpsuit, macramé and crochet, and the clog amongst others… and will show you ways to make these styles fit your brand of voluptuous curves.
