As of April 9th, the retail store for SexyPlus Clothing officially opened in downtown Toronto (901 Yonge St.)  The Grand Opening was such a fun afternoon I spent with my girlfriends Liz and Laurie.  Stefanie, owner of SexyPlus Clothing and her super blogger sidekick Nina were gracious hosts.

We believe that plus size clothing should be a celebration, not an apology and our vast selection will make you feel feminine and fabulous again. You might even be surprised that it’s a boutique dedicated to curvy girls because the styles are so fresh and fun like you’ve never seen.

When I got the call, I was thrilled because SexyPlus Clothing is still a growing business and I didn’t have a retail location. The marriage of Rina’s exquisite formal wear and my sexy, trendy styles was a wonderful match to provide complementary and versatile selections for our customers.

Now, 4 months later, we’ve established a friendship and a wonderful professional relationship. We have the same vision about customer service, and going the extra mile for our customers; about integrity, and ensuring that our prices are affordable despite the traditionally high prices for plus size clothing in Canada; and about believing in our business.

I have always considered myself to be a lucky person, but then my friends remind me how hard I work. Maybe it’s just good judgement, instinct and passion. Or all of the above, and a bit of love too. In any case, I am still committed to being the premier retailer of unique, figure-flattering, sexy and classic styles in plus sizes in Canada…and beyond. And sharing the space inside Rina’s Maximum Woman store located at 2120 Eglinton Avenue West in Toronto has been an awesome experience. I’ve learned that variety is key, sincere service and patience are fundamental and that hard work, at every single moment, is rewarding. Rina is a amazing woman, who makes being amazing seem effortless. She has a big heart and a sharp mind for business.

Rina may have had reservations about teaming up with me in the beginning because we are each other’s competition, after all, and I certainly considered the risks, but we both made the right move; the last four months have proved it. Sometimes joining forces is the best thing competitors can do – and customers benefit from it.

Maybe in the future SexyPlus Clothing will have it’s own location, or maybe Rina and I will continue to work together, but for now this formula is a charm because we share a beautiful store and an even better chemistry. We are making many customers happy. Our days consist of sharing ideas, placing orders, meeting with suppliers, and most importantly helping voluptuous women of all walks of life feel beautiful and find the perfect fit.

The air conditioned store features 4 large change rooms (equipped with chairs, mirrors and try-on shoes), free parking, a vast selections of casual wear, club wear, formal wear and classic styles. We are open 7 days a week.

The afternoon’s events included presentations by Keynote Speaker Linda Ockwell-Jenner, a Speaker and Business Development Consultant born in Birmingham, England who immigrated to Canada in 1993. In 1997 Linda faced her toughestchallenge when she was diagnosed withbreast cancer. Making things more difficult were financial pressures, withLinda juggling three jobs in retail and hospitality. By 2000, Linda was enjoying life and a new relationship only to be diagnosed once again with breast cancer.

Overcoming this terrible disease a second time, Linda went back to school in 2001 where she discovered a passion for speaking and founded www.motivationalsteps.com. On Sunday, Linda spoke to us with a mixture of humour, emotion, and left a permanent message of hope.

We later enjoyed the comedy of one of Canada’s top female entertainers Judy Croon, a fashion show by SexyPlus Clothing and Curvaceous Consignments sporting the most unique and fashion forward looks in plus sizes, a fashion show by Jockey, a delicious lunch and good old fashioned socializing. There was an air of sincerity and warmth among the women (and a few men) which made networking seem natural, when it can sometimes feel like “work”.

I was proud to model SexyPlus Clothing and sported the Pretty Woman Series Babydoll Top in Pink with our new Perfect Plus Size Capris in Black (shown above), as well as our Wild Roxanne Plus Size Top in Hot Pink. Being the owner of SexyPlus Clothing and not a professional model, I must admit that it was fun. I felt super confident because I am obviously partial to the clothes, and was grateful for the applause. The other models, customers of Curvaceous Consignments shown below, did fabulously and I think they had fun too. The audience seemed to enjoy the fact that we were regular women, of different sizes and shapes, representing plus sizes which are so rarely featured in fashion shows.

I learned, some time ago, from a super-charged woman named Katia  Miller (www.positivefabulouswomen.com) that in networking you must first ask how you can help, so in that spirit, I will introduce you to other female entrepreneurs who were present and helped raised funds for breast cancer research on this emotionally charged and delightful afternoon.

There were many more extraordinary women but I did not manage to capture them all in pictures or in introduction – partly because it was so informative and enjoyable exchanging with the ladies I did meet. While there was shopping and sharing, fine dining and fashion parading, the bottom line is that we must FIND A CURE for BREAST CANCER and support all those affected by it through compassion, financial support, awareness and love.
